NPI numbers have been a total pain and just another excuse for Medicare not to pay the physicians. 

NPI TIPS:

Make sure you received your PTAN numbers (group and individual numbers) from Medicare.

Make sure when you filled out the form for your NPI you've included all your PTAN numbers and your other numbers (such as Blue Cross)

Make sure you filled out paperwork for Blue Cross/Blue Shield showing your NPI number, you can do this online at www.bcbsil.com for Illinois providers.

Each referring physician must have an NPI number also (not only a UPIN).  You can look up your referring physicians at http://www.hmedata.com

May 23rd, 2008 is the deadline that clearinghouses and Medicare will only be using NPI and Legacy numbers will not needed.
